Once upon a time – the 2012/13 season to be precise – in a top flight not so far away, the goal charts were ruled by one man – Swansea City striker Michu.
Well, that’s a slight exaggeration because Robin van Persie actually took the Golden Boot that year as he fired Manchester United to the Premier League title.
But nonetheless, Michu was the best pound-for-pound finisher in the division and a real cult hero amongst the Premier League fan base, notching up 18 goals in 35 appearances after joining the Liberty Stadium ranks for a miserly £2million from Rayo Vallecano.
Michu’s impressive form earned him a call-up to the Spain squad, comparisons with the great Dennis Bergkamp courtesy of Arsene Wenger and regular listings as an Arsenal target – with the tabloids valuing him at a whopping £30million.
But fast forward to the present day and you wouldn’t find Arsenal – or any Premier League club, for that matter – shelling out 30 pence for the now-29-year-old, let alone a whopping £30million.
Indeed, after struggling for form and a horrendous spate of ankle injuries during his second season with Swansea City, before managing just three Serie A appearances whilst on loan at Napoli the year after, Michu was released by the Welsh outfit in November 2015.
The 6 foot 1 forward has spent the last month without a club, but now finds himself employed all the way down in the Spanish fourth tier with Union Popular de Langreo, just two-and-a-half-years after finishing up as the Premier League’s fifth-top scorer.

Perhaps most humiliatingly, it turns out Michu’s latest gig is a family affair – Langreo head coach Hernan Perez is his older brother. Which begs the question… is Michu the greatest one-season wonder the Premier League has ever witnessed?
